Hanoi, September 12, 2025 – Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security has launched an investigation into a major cyberattack on the National Credit Information Center (CIC), the country’s central credit bureau.

The CIC, which manages millions of citizens’ credit histories and financial risk data, reported unauthorized access into its systems earlier this week. Initial probes suggest the involvement of the well-known hacking group ShinyHunters, which has a record of leaking sensitive financial and corporate data worldwide.

Government Response
The State Bank of Vietnam has ordered heightened cybersecurity measures for all financial institutions, urging banks and fintech companies to immediately:
- Audit their IT systems
- Strengthen network defenses
- Enforce multi-factor authentication (MFA)
- Report suspicious activity without delay
Why It Matters
This incident has raised serious concerns about financial data security in Vietnam, especially as the country pushes forward with its digital banking and fintech expansion. Experts warn that if leaked, such data could be exploited for identity theft, fraudulent loans, and phishing scams.
Looking Ahead
Authorities have promised transparency in the investigation, while urging citizens to stay alert for unusual activity in their financial accounts.
